Advice For New Creators

November 21, 2020 by Danny Miranda

My friend Dickie Bush (check out our conversation here) asked me a great question:

If you could give one piece of advice to yourself way back in your first few days as a creator, what would it be?

Figured I’d share my answer with you as well:

Set an internal goal. Something you can control. Write 100 articles, record 100 podcasts, publish 100 videos.

That doesn’t mean ignore external feedback. Just the opposite. Try to improve your creations. Reach out for help. Ask someone what they think. Improve.

When you publish your first piece as a creator, you’ve embarked on a journey.

Enjoy every step.

The Internet Is Magic

November 20, 2020 by Danny Miranda

Something magical happened.

Jack Butcher was on the podcast. He was thinking of a quote, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

Then he typed some buttons on a machine.

And the phrase popped out at him.

Think about the absurdity of that.

I mean, I even stopped in the middle of the conversation to point out how crazy this is.

Imagine, at any other point in history, if you had trouble remembering something… and then you could just tap some keys and the answer popped back to you?!?

This post is a reminder that the internet is awesome.

PS: The quote was…

“The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function.“ –Albert Allen Bartlett

Important Not Urgent

November 19, 2020 by Danny Miranda

I just spent an hour backing up my unreleased podcast episodes to Google Drive.

Why?

It hit me that all these conversations would be gone if something happened to my computer. Quite a troubling thought. I’d have wasted the guests time, I’d be 20 episodes behind, and I’d have a lot of work to do.

I realized this a few days ago.

And I actually put off doing it for a few days because it was important but not urgent. I knew it would it take some time and it’s a boring process. But I just bit the bullet and did it.

This isn’t exactly some groundbreaking idea. To back up my stuff.

But let it be a reminder for you to do something in your own life that is important but not urgent.

Because, from my experience, those are the most difficult tasks to get ourselves to do.

And when we do them?

We sleep much better at night.

This is Day 14 of 14 of my daily writing challenge.

It’s All In Your Head by Russ Notes

November 19, 2020 by Danny Miranda

Amazon.com: IT'S ALL IN YOUR HEAD (9780062962430): Russ: Books

Amazon (Link)

Russ started rapping in 2006. By 2015, he became a worldwide sensation. This book is part autobiography, part self-help. You’ll learn why Russ believes the three keys to achieving your dreams are delusion, persistence, and gratitude. Short read but lot of wisdom in these pages.

  • There are three essential qualities into turning your life into your dream life: delusion, persistence, gratitude

Delusion

  • “You have to be careful what you think about, because it comes true.”
  • When you set your achievement in the future, you’re already putting it off. The future never comes. It will always remain the future. You need to say “I am successful.” You need to believe so deeply that you are just waiting for the world to catch up.
  • Living off delusion is healthy. Everything is unrealistic until it’s not. Follow your dream despite its contraction with the known reality and the rational expectations and assumptions of other people
  • Become addicted to the craft. After the show, Russ partied with the fans but the whole time he was itching to get back into the hotel to record.
  • Get so lost in your passion that the numbers on a clock aren’t real. Time isn’t real. Just clocks.
  • Detach from the when. If you’re too attached to the when, you will be fighting the natural flow of the universe. It knows the exact right moment everything needs to happen.
  • Fuck the points. Play for the love of the game.

Questions About 75 HARD

November 18, 2020 by Danny Miranda

A reader sent in some questions about 75 HARD. Answers below.

[If you’re reading this and have any questions for me, you can reach me at danny [at] dannymiranda [dot] com and I’ll be happy to answer.]

What diet(s) have you done in the past? Any recommendations here?

The diet I’ve stuck to is real whole foods. Similar to Whole 30. Most of my diet consists of steak, ground turkey, ground beef, chicken, fish, sweet potatoes, potatoes, white rice, and fruits (probably could use a bit more veggies). My basic rule is if it comes from the ground or an animal… it’s okay to go into my body. If it doesn’t… no Bueno.

For the two 45 minute workouts, does this include walking?

Yes, walking is allowed! It’s the most underrated form of exercise.

What other workouts have you done outdoors?

Runs, weighted vest walks, jump rope are my big three outdoor activities. In the past, I’ve played tennis, basketball, and created circuits of pushups/running/situps/squats.

What have been your go-to or favorite workouts for the 45 minute slots?

Outdoor workouts listed above. For the indoor workouts, I stick to weights or yoga.

Any other general recommendations / insights would be much appreciated.

Accountability is the biggest factor. There are likely going to be points in this program you’re going to want to quit. You’re only making it harder on yourself if you’re not accountable to someone you respect (and who might be disappointed in you if you didn’t finish).

Preparation is huge. Overprepare for meals, workouts, etc.

Other than that, I would recommend diving into some of the posts I wrote about here, here, and here.

Best of luck!

This is Day 13 of 14 of my daily writing challenge.

The Winners Manual Notes

November 18, 2020 by Danny Miranda

The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life: Tressel, Jim, Fabry, Chris, Maxwell, John: 9781414325705: Amazon.com: Books

Amazon (Link)

“If the game of life ended today, would you be a winner?” This book goes deep on the practices best practices Jim Tressel has found on winning the game of life. I loved it. And if you’re pursuing the highest version of yourself, you probably will as well.

  • On Goals
    • Goals are important but it’s important to understand people are not defined by their goals. A win or a loss does not make you better or worse as a human being.
    • Let your goals come from your purpose
    • Goals must be measurable. You need to be able to quantify what you want to accomplish
  • On Success
    • “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you’re capable of becoming.” –John Wooden
    • Success is an everyday proposition
    • The true measure of success is whether we feel good about our ability to contribute to whatever team we’re on.
    • More difficult to handle success than adversity. That’s because it’s a natural human tendency to rest on our laurels when we’ve done well. If we get punched in the nose, we have an instinctual desire to fight back
    • “Success is a lousy teacher. It makes smart people think they can’t lose.” –Bill Gates
    • True success is achieve when our main concern is the good of others and the building up of the team
